Energy Resources and Climate Change

Semester 1

Module   Description
Introduction to Energy Technologies This module covers energy conversion fundamentals and technologies whilst relating these elements to sustainability. This module looks at energy from social, environmental and economic perspectives.
Energy Resources and Engineering  Understand energy resources, engineering technologies for energy conversion and appreciate solutions available to meet the world's power demands. Formulate realistic engineering solutions to specific energy and power problems, using a mix of renewable energy systems and traditional power technologies.
Climate Change, Energy and Settlements Establishes the basics of the evolution of buildings and settlements in relation to the wider climate and environment. Focusses on the relationships between architectural design and society today and how these relate to energy availability and energy consumption throughout history.
FEEG6025 Data Analysis and Experimental Methods for Civil and Environmental Engineering      This module will cover the statistical data analysis skills essential for today's engineers in order to test hypotheses and quantify statistical significance'

 

Semester 2

Module   Description
Bioenergy Analyze the main systems and supply chains that can be used for biomass energy conversion and utilisation. Develop designs for biomass energy conversion and utilization within the context of a whole systems approach. Evaluate the environmental benefits and consequences of biomass energy production.
Waste Resource Management The module considers solid wastes from industry, commerce and domestic sources. include waste minimization, reuse, recycling and recovery as practical alternatives to disposal techniques. The technology and management strategies associated with such schemes are dealt with in detail. The module also considers planning and economic issues associated with the industry.
Geographic Information Systems                          GIS terminology and architecture, GIS data structures, cartographic principles, data sources and methods of data acquisition including remote sensing, data manipulation and conversion, data quality and spatial analysis.

Module   Description
Climatic Design of blgs & cities Develop climatic building designs and sustainable urban concepts to achieve the significant carbon reductions required in the future. Deepen understanding of the complex interrelation between individual buildings and their urban settings on a case study project.
Energy Performance Assessment of Buildings              Apply the various assessment methods (including BREEAM, EPC, DEC, SAP, SBEM, CODE and HIP) available to maximise energy efficiency of existing buildings and new building designs as well as to critically assess the results given by the various rating systems.

Accreditation

MSc (Technical and non-technical)

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree. See the JBM website for further information.
