Dr Alan Wong is a Research Fellow within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Alan‘s current research interests focus on improving the de-carbonisation of road transport and encouraging more sustainable modes of travel, including walking, cycling and public transport. Other research includes improving the provision of walking facilities for older people, the delivery of mobile and other value-added information systems and guidance services, and an evaluation of car sharing and car pooling schemes in European cities. Previously, he worked for Transport for London in developing innovative uses for the data from their iBus Automatic Vehicle Location System, including how large-scale information can improve bus detection and the vehicle priority strategies deployed at signals, and providing an alternative method for measuring the dwell times of buses at bus stops. He has also worked with MIT and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) on assessing the impact of in vehicle systems tasks on drivers’ workload and how they cope as a consequence.

He holds an Engineering Doctorate in Transport Knowledge and Systems Engineering, business and technology qualifications, and has won awards for Science Communications and in Research Presentation. He is also active in delivering public engagement impact on behalf of the University, including exhibitions of Intelligent Transport Systems at the Cheltenham Science Festival, Winchester Science Centre (Intech), the Bestival music festival and the Royal Society’s Summer Exhibition. He coordinates a public engagement group for early-career and PhD researchers, and is part of the University’s Roadshow and public engagement with research network.
