Research project: High strain impact and erosion resistant materials
This aims of project include the investigation of bioinspired, multilayer structures to resist impact, particularly with a view to reducing shock at the rear of the material.

A large test matrix of substrate types was assessed using a specially designed high speed impact rig. Inspiration was drawn from naturally developed multilayer and hierarchical structures such as mother-of-pearl. In addition, it has been found that ultra-thin layers can have a significant on the impact absorbing properties of bulk materials, and that changing their position in the sandwich structure alone will affect the performance of the sample.
