Materials, Solid Mechanics and Surface Engineering

Welcome to our Materials, Solid Mechanics and Surface Engineering research case studies

Figure 1

Key challenges in the 21st Century involve sustainable feedstocks, bespoke manufacture, material reduction, ‘smart materials’ that self-sense and repair, light-weighting for greening, end-of-life recycling and operating in harsh environments. Our experts work across a wide number of application areas, from aerospace and automotive materials, to energy materials, surface engineering and corrosion.

Our research ranges from electrochemical engineering to artificial hips, microsystems to 3D printing, micro dry powder dispensing to tribology, and tomographic imaging to artificial intelligence. Our core strengths include functional materials, surface engineering, materials processing, structural materials and computed tomography.

Solid lubricant coatings

Ultra-thin coatings, often only a few atoms thick, can provide solid lubrication in demanding engineering applications.

Fig 3

Next generation additive manufacturing

Our scientists are conducting novel research to develop a multiple-materials additive manufacturing technique which could produce functional design materials with the potential for a wide range of applications.

Smart bearings

Smart Bearings

Our research studies fundamentals of bearings and investigates critical failure modes that have significant impacts on industries.
