Library Regulations: Schedule 1: Admission to University Library as a Reader and a Borrower

1. Admission as a reader

In addition to those admitted as readers under Library Regulation 1(a), the privilege of admission as a reader may be accorded to others at the discretion of the Librarian, normally following receipt of a written application on the standard form required by the Library.

Successful applicants will be issued with an External Reader Ticket which must be produced on demand when visiting the Library.

In considering applications, the Librarian will have regard to the library needs of the applicant, and the suitability of the resources of the University Library in comparison with other local libraries

2. Admission as a borrower

In addition to those admitted as borrowers under Library Regulation 1(b), the privilege of admission as a borrower may be accorded to others at the discretion of the Librarian, normally following receipt of a written application on the standard form required by the Library.

In considering such applications, the Librarian will give preferential consideration to applicants in the following categories:

  1. Members of the University of Southampton Society
  2. Academic staff and occupants of staff equivalent research posts in the colleges accredited by or providing courses validated by the University of Southampton
  3. Persons engaged in study or research in the field of Jewish and non-Jewish relationships, or other related fields
  4. Teachers and others engaged in education services in the region
  5. Junior members of the paramedical professions and administrative staff of hospitals working within the Wessex Regional Health Authority area (as recommended by a senior member of their unit or division

In considering other applications, the Librarian will have regard to the special needs of the applicant and the suitability of the Library's resources for those needs. Some categories of borrower will be required to pay charges.
