Dr Ying Wang (王颖) is a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics (Global Englishes) in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton.

I became a lecturer in Modern Languages and Linguistics, University of Southampton in 2015. Before this, I had two years’ experience of lecturing Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics in a Chinese university. I received my PhD degree with a research project looking into Chinese speakers’ perceptions of their own English in intercultural communication.

Research interests

My research interests include English as a lingua franca, global Englishes, language attitude, identity and ideology, language policy and English education. My PhD project was particularly focused on Chinese speakers’ language attitudes and their identities by using a mixed-method approach. After that, I did a small research project with some colleagues in China looking at language policy and language planning in a Chinese university, with the particular focus on the role of English in education.

I worked as a programme coordinator on the organising committee of the Eighth International Conference of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF8) held in Beijing, 25-27 August, 2015. I currently work for Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, running the blog English as a lingua franca (

I’m writing a monograph on language ideologies in China, which is focused on Chinese speakers’ ELF awareness among various language ideologies.
