Part of the research community

Research today is often driven by international collaborations, both formal and informal, and we aim to offer you the opportunity to travel during your PhD. Meeting academics from all over the world, through presenting your own work at national and international conferences, you will become part of a global research community.

Closer to home, all our postgraduates are members of the student-run Humanities Postgraduate Connection student group, which arranges extracurricular activities including social events, seminars, sports and more.

Avenue Campus

Modern Languages and Linguistics is based in a purpose-built campus for the Humanities, combining ‘Ivy League’ with ‘warm minimalism’. Avenue Campus is on the edge of Southampton Common and a short walk from the main University campus. The main Highfield Campus houses the Students Union, an impressive range of cultural and recreational facilities, the Library and many shops including a travel agent, Waterstones bookshop, two health practices and outlets for the main high street banks. The Avenue Campus has its own reference library, computer workstation clusters, lecture-theatres and seminar rooms.

The city

Southampton is a thriving modern city, steeped in history and with a vibrant mix of recreation, culture and entertainment. Cinemas, sports facilities, internationally acclaimed arts venues and one of the UK’s top shopping centres – the city has something for everyone.

The city and surrounding areas offer a rich resource for the humanities. Multiple arts venues both on and off campus, close proximity and easy travel to London and key research collections make the University of Southampton a thriving academic hub for humanities subjects.

The uni-link bus service provides easy access to the city, the airport and coach and train stations. As well as excellent links to Europe via cross-channel ferries from Portsmouth and Poole, there are frequent flights to continental destinations from Southampton and Bournemouth Airports.
