Rand Ismaeel is a Royal Academy of Engineering fellow at the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton and senior development engineer at the National Oceanography Centre. She obtained her MSc (Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering) from Al Nahrain University (Baghdad), and her PhD in Optoelectronics from the Optoelectronics Research Centre in 2015. Her main research interests involve working on the fabrication of devices and sensors based on optical fibres and microfibers and on the design and fabrication of rare earth doped scintillating fibres. In recent years, her research focused on using photonics technologies for monitoring hydrocarbons and other pollutant in the ocean. She has published >60 papers in international scientific journals/conferences, and co-authored 1 book on optical fibres.
