Research project

Animal Welfare: Measurement and Applications

Project overview

Drawing on her prior experience in zoology and animal husbandry, philosopher Heather Browning is addressing foundational conceptual and methodological questions in animal welfare science.

This research focuses on how animal welfare can be measured and the applications in animal ethics, policy, and husbandry, with a focus on zoo animals, wild animals, and invertebrates. Dr Browning's work is used by animal welfare NGOs in grantmaking and advocacy, such as recent campaigns to ban octopus farming.
