Research project

Narrative Exergaming (exercise controlled gaming) to Improve Exercise Adherence

Project overview

The aim of this project is to design and build a narrative exergaming (exercise controlled gaming) prototype for children to improve exercise adherence. Exergaming is a promising motivational tool to incentivise exercising . It has been found to improve exercise performance, player experience, and intrinsic motivation which are important predictors of exercise adherence . It provides an effective distraction from unpleasant exercising sensations like muscular pain and fatigue. Children do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity and one of the main contributing factors to this problem is increased time spent playing sedentary video games. Exergaming uses the motivational effects of conventional video games to incentivise exercising. Narrative exergaming involves combining story telling elements with exergaming as interactive narrative has been found to improve game replayability.
