Accessible sports and fitness

At the University of Southampton, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to stay active and lead a healthy lifestyle, regardless of their needs. That’s why we’re committed to making our facilities and activities as inclusive as possible.

The Jubilee Centre has inclusive spaces, accessible equipment, dedicated quiet times during the week and several offers and specialised sessions on offer to help meet your needs.

Accessible features

Adapted equipment

We have a range of accessible equipment, known as Inclusive Fitness Items (IFI). This includes cardiovascular items with an LED screen with more tactile controls and resistance items with seats that can be removed.

Inclusive changing rooms

Our changing rooms are located on the same floor as the Jubilee Sports Centre entrance and reception, and include a disabled shower and changing room.

We also have a gender-neutral changing village with individual cubicles and showers.

Gym quiet time

  • 2pm to 3pm every Tuesday and Wednesday

During these quiet hours our music system is turned off. You're welcome to listen to music through headphones, but we ask all gym-users to help maintain a quiet atmosphere during these sessions.

Ensuring your welfare

All Athletic Union clubs are required to nominate one of their members to act as welfare officer. Welfare officers are responsible for overseeing the wellbeing of their club members.

These officers, and other committee members, are required to complete welfare, inclusivity, diversity and equality (WIDE) training.

Sessions, classes and courses

Supported fitness sessions

We work closely with our enabling team to support student wellbeing at University of Southampton.

Please speak to a member of the team if you need support in our gyms. We're happy to discuss any issues with you, and offer gym equipment that can be adapted to meet your needs.

We have several staff holding GP referral qualifications and Level 3 exercise for disabled clients, with the appropriate experience managing exercise with contraindications.

Exercise Physiology sessions

If you have an injury or long-term health condition and want support in rehabilitation or improving your health, our Exercise Physiology sessions could be right for you.

Exercise physiology is the scientific study of how the body's cardiovascular, muscular and metabolic systems respond and adapt to physical activity. Sessions with our accredited Exercise Physiologist, Andy, involve specialised, individualised exercise interventions to help you manage chronic conditions and improve physical function.

Your first session will be a consultation to discuss your needs and either some testing or exercise based off this discussion. Further sessions will be in the gym going through exercises specific to your injury or condition.

These sessions will be most beneficial if you have a diagnosis so that we can target the specific needs and considerations for that injury or condition.
