About the Global Legal Clinic
Work with real clients supported by qualified lawyers, apply your skills in a practical setting and make a positive contribution to the community by joining the Global Legal Clinic as a Clinic Advisor.
Work on real cases while you study
The Global Legal Clinic is a group of student-led pro bono clinics across different areas of law where free legal advice is given to the public, staff and students in the UK and internationally.
Participation is open to all current Law students at the University of Southampton, whether undergraduate or postgraduate. The Clinic is sponsored by Hodge Jones & Allen Solicitors, an award winning law firm and a member of the Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Pro Bono Committee.
"Being part of the Global Legal Clinic has had a significant impact on my studies. It has strengthened my understanding of the research tools we use which has improved the overall quality of any research I undertake in my modules. It gives the theory of the learning a practical basis which improves your confidence for what will be expected of you in the workplace. I would strongly recommend the GLC to other students."

A competitive advantage to start your career
Working with the Clinic offers the opportunity to gain experience that will give you a head start in your career by:
- working on real cases
- applying law in a practical context
- networking with our partners and your peers
- learning from qualified lawyers
Among other opportunities, you'll be invited to regular networking events through the Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Pro Bono Committee, allowing you to connect with practitioners locally, nationally and globally.
What you'll be doing
As a member of the Clinic you'll take on real cases from real members of the public as advisors. You'll be supported by the Clinic's team of qualified lawyers but you’ll take ownership of your cases and will be expected to take on at least 1 activity per year.
You'll be given all the training you need to participate and can choose to work in the area of law that interests you from our 5 clinic areas:
- animal rights
- environmental law
- business law
- public legal education
- live-client Clinic
You can also apply to sit on the Student Committee. As part of this Committee you'll help organise events, review case reports and grade clinic applications from your peers, gaining further leadership and management skills.
When to apply
The application process opens at the start of the academic year. You'll be contacted by email with all the information needed to apply.
In your application you'll need to demonstrate the skills needed to manage your workload effectively alongside your studies and to work with members of the public while upholding the University's reputation.
