About the project
The Royal Navy Musculoskeletal Injury Mitigation Programme (RN MMP) aims to support Sailor and Royal Marines’ musculoskeletal health. It is led by the Institute of Naval Medicine (INM). It also supports six PhD programmes within the RN MMP Academic Partner University Consortium. This includes the Universities of Southampton, Exeter and Bath.
You will examine the relationship between movement control and functional military tasks. You will determine the feasibility of implementing a movement control exercise programme to improve movement control in the Royal Navy. The use of movement screening tools has developed over the years to assess movement quality, identify potential abnormal movements, and help guide interventions that aim to improve movement quality.
The School of Health Sciences has a long-standing collaborative working relationship with the Institute of Naval Medicine. Previous projects have investigated the bio-mechanical mechanisms of movement quality and assessed the feasibility of implementing a motor control exercise programme in Phase 1 Army and Phase 2 Navy recruits.
You will build on this pervious work and help further understand the potential mechanisms of injury and examine ways to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury within the Royal Navy. The project is one of six studentships across three academic institutions, fully funded by the Royal Navy. It offers and exciting opportunity to work in multidisciplinary environment. The project will have significant impact, not only at an academic level, but also institutional level where the findings will help inform injury mitigation strategies and policies within the Royal Navy.
