I chose to study at Southampton because it was the only English course that allowed me to go on a year abroad to my dream destination - Spain!
I spent a year studying in Barcelona and it was the best experience of my life. I made lots of lovely new friends from all around the world, discovered new places and embraced all that there was to Catalan life and culture.
Being able to study abroad challenged me in many ways and helped me grow as a person. It was interesting to study English from a foreign perspective, and I realised how important and integral it is to literature all around the world.
I am very thankful to Southampton for providing me with this opportunity.
Studying in Southampton
Being at the University of Southampton has allowed me to grow academically and gain a deeper understanding of the differences the creative arts make in the world. I’ve learnt so many transferable skills that I will take with me after my degree, and I’ve become more confident through the opportunity to live alone and look after myself for the first time.
The course has given me a lot of freedom to experiment with different writing styles and allowed me to learn about literature from various centuries, from ancient Greek mythology to modern contemporary cinema. I’ve enjoyed the different writing styles that we’re encouraged to develop. We don’t just have to write analytical essays - we can be really creative through our own stories and poems.
A vibrant student community
There is a great atmosphere around campus and the student community. There are lots of activities and societies provided by the Students' Union. They really support students and look out for us - even providing work experiences and a job for me!
The facilities are really useful too - the library is very well equipped with research accessories.
My advice for future students
Make the most of the opportunities at university. A year abroad is the best experience I’ve ever had and I would love to do it again. Utilise your lecturers - make the most of their help, they’re there for a reason and try and join societies at the Students' Union.
Put in the effort and attend all your lectures - it made the biggest difference for me and really helped me love the degree that I do.
