The MA Design Management course has given me the to create sustainable designs

Melindah is from Indonesia, where plastic waste pollution is a longstanding problem. At Southampton she’s gained the skills she needs to be part of the solution.

On the Design Management master’s, I learned about creating design solutions, but also how to run a design business and market products. This was ideal for me, because my ambition is to set up my own sustainable design studio, turning plastic waste into innovative furniture and interiors.

Through my thesis and final project, I gained hands-on knowledge of circular economy principles, looking at how non-profit organisations in Indonesia and in the UK manage plastic waste. It was the top final project in my cohort, which I’m really proud of!

Interactive learning

I really enjoyed how interactive the course was. We were encouraged to develop our ideas through sketching, visual thinking, and critical argument, which helped us think like designers and problem-solvers.

We also worked on real case studies and took part in museum and gallery visits, as well as hands-on workshops, which made learning practical and engaging.

Celebrating my culture

Outside of my studies, a highlight for me was being project leader for the Indonesian Cultural Festival. With other Indonesian students, we organised a festival to introduce our culture through traditional food and performances. Our guests included the Indonesian Ambassador to the UK and the Lord Mayor of Southampton, which made the experience even more special.

It helped me gain confidence in my leadership skills too, because it meant liaising with different organisations, solving issues and making sure things ran smoothly.

A fun and supportive environment

I lived and spent most of my time in Southampton and studied in Winchester – the University has a convenient bus link that made commuting easy. There were lots of fun wellbeing and sports activities on campus, and a free cinema. I never got bored!

It was my first time living away from my home country, and the University really took care of me. One time I was ill and my tutor was so supportive, making sure I didn’t worry about my studies and had everything I needed. The library and campus staff were really friendly and helpful too, especially during exam time. Even though I was far from my family, with all this amazing support around me I didn’t feel alone.

Inspired to make an impact

I’m currently living in London and working as a graphic designer, while making connections for my future business. I’ve been collaborating with a plastic recycling company, talking about how to progress making products from plastic waste.

I feel inspired and ready to turn what I’ve learned into a real business that can make a positive impact.
