We’re aware our postgraduate researchers may have questions relating to how lockdown may affect their research, and access to campus. We’ve put together a dedicated FAQ for PGR students below.
The Doctoral College Covid-19 webpage contains information, links and guidance on all matters related to PGR students and supervisors. It is updated regularly as the situation evolves.
Campus buildings are closed with the only exception being for essential workers. PGR students should continue to work from home for the time being
Regular supervisory team meetings should continue but will need to be conducted online.
PGRs currently resident in Southampton or Winchester may access on-campus research resources or facilities only on the basis of essential need, if available and COVID-19 secure using Active Campus procedures. You should contact the relevant lab or building manager to discuss your situation and requirements for access.
No off-campus face-to-face fieldwork or travel (but carrying out of online research may be permitted). You should discuss this with your supervisory team to ensure that work on your research project can continue.
All progression review and final thesis viva’s will continue to be conducted online. Full details can be found on the Extraordinary Quality Handbook. The Doctoral College has produced guidance for students, supervisors and assessors/examiners on conducting online viva’s which can be found here.
You must comply with UK Government regulations and self-isolate for 10 days andyou must register with the University’s COVID-19 saliva testing programme.
Once you have finished self-isolation, you must obtain one negative test before accessing research facilities or meeting people on campus.
If you took a private test under UK Government regulations to be released from the need to self-isolate, you must still obtain a negative saliva test result.
You must register for the University of SouthamptonCOVID-19 salvia testing programme and obtain two successive negative tests before returning to research facilities on campus.
You do not need to self-isolate beforehand, unless you have COVID-19 symptoms or have received a positive test, but you should comply with UK Government Lockdown Regulations. You may visit campus drop off points to return your saliva test samples, but you must not access any buildings or interact with other people on campus until two successive negative test results have been obtained.

Students can contacts their Faculty Graduate School for independent help and advice. Each Faculty also has the Graduate School Directorate consisting of a Director of the Graduate School and a Doctoral Programme Director for each School.
