This module introduces you to sustainable and responsible textile practices through an in depth exploration of global artisanship. It examines the cultural significance, ethical values and historical contexts of craft traditions, highlighting the skills and community knowledge that shape global artisanal textile production in couture ateliers, métiers and craft clusters. You will investigate key environmental, social, economic and business sustainability factors influencing global textile industries, and critically consider the opportunities artisanship presents within circular economy and social enterprise models. Through practical engagement with traditional materials, techniques and processes, you will broaden your awareness of global textile cultures while enhancing creative and technical abilities. A core component of the module is collaborative engagement with relevant artisan communities, enabling you to understand diverse craft practices, ethical production models and culturally informed approaches to design. Alongside this, you will learn methods for sustainable textile product development for luxury fashion, interiors or lifestyle sectors, integrating principles of storytelling, transparency and responsibility. Attention is given to conscious consumer behaviour and shifting values within sustainable and luxury markets, encouraging entrepreneurial thinking within artisanal and ethical ventures. The module also supports you in developing digital communication skills for presenting and promoting your work professionally. Academic development is embedded throughout, with emphasis on critical thinking, reflective practice, research and writing. By the end of the module, you will have gained the knowledge, practical experience and critical insight needed to apply and value global artisanship in the development of sustainable textile products.
