Syllabus
This module focuses on practical techniques in seismology that allow us to assess geohazards and the impacts of fluid injection and extraction, related to, for example, resource extraction and storage, and to increase our understanding of tectonic processes. The module comprises a series of lectures and exercises in which students are provided with datasets that illustrate different applications of seismology and analyse each of these datasets in a series of practical sessions. Applications will include volcano seismicity, tectonic (earthquake) seismicity and induced seismicity related to, for example, fluid injection and extraction. The practical sessions will be supported by lectures providing the scientific background required, focusing on active Earth processes.
Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
Formal lectures (2 x 1-hour sessions per week) will introduce students to the cutting edge of research in the use of earthquake seismology to study volcanic processes, tectonic processes and induced seismicity.
Practical sessions (1 x 3-hour session per week) will introduce students to large datasets available online or provided by teaching staff. For each dataset, students will conduct an analysis over several weeks using software and other materials provided, to make inferences about Earth processes.
