Professor Nikos Tzavidis PhD
Head of Economic, Social and Political Sciences, Professor of Statistical Methodology

Professor Nikos Tzavidis is Head of School - Economic, Social and Political Sciences and Professor of Statistical Methodology within Social Statistics and Demography and the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute at the University of Southampton.
After completing his MSc in statistics Professor Tzavidis joined the R&D unit of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat). Since completing his PhD he has held a post-doc position at the University of Southampton and academic positions at the Centre for Longitudinal Studies, Institute of Education, University College London and at the Cathie Marsh Institute for Census and Survey Research, University of Manchester. He joined the University of Southampton for the second time in September 2010.
His research is supported by the European Union's Framework Programmes, the British Academy, the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the UK Office for National Statistics and the UK Department for International Development. Professor Tzavidis has also been involved in consultancy work for National Statistical Institutes and Government Departments in the UK (Office for National Statistics and the Welsh Government), Europe (e.g. Central Bureau of Statistics, Netherlands) and overseas (e.g. National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy, Mexico).
In 2013 Professor Tzavidis was awarded a Vice-Chancellor Teaching Award. In 2019-20 he was a visiting Professor at the Sapienza University in Rome. Professor Tzavidis is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), he has served on the council of the International Association of Survey Statisticians (IASS) and as Associate Editor for the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series A. He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Official Statistics and the International Statistical Review and as an academic assessor for the UK Government Statistical Service Fast Stream. Since 2018 he serves on the advisory board of the Research Institute for Official and Survey Statistics in Trier Germany.
