Julio Carillo is a PhD student at Southampton Education School, and a Social Psychologist with an MA in Planning Education. Prior to starting his PhD, he collaborated with Federal Government, environmental agencies and United Nations in Mexico as Capacity Development and Training Consultant.

Research interests

Julio is interested in the Sociology of Professions with specific focus on Teachers. His PhD summarises 30 years of education reform in England and aims to explore how are these changes translated into teachers’ professional life.

The study adopts an ethnography approach and explores in depth three key professional attributes:

  • knowledge
  • responsibility
  • autonomy

There are varied interpretations amongst teachers about these attributes which results in a diverse way to perform. Such diversity is in direct tension with education policy prescriptions. Currently he is part of an advisory group that supports school management around Hampshire (UK).

Julio's research supervisors are Cristina Azaola and Michael Grenfell
