Rowan Edwards is an Integrated PhD student at Southampton Education School, University of Southampton.

Research interests

Rowan's research interest lies in how English primary schools promote the wellbeing of their pupils.

Following the completion of a BSc in Occupational Therapy at the University of Southampton in 2016, they have remained passionate about improving good mental health and wellbeing for all children. Rowan believes whole-school initiatives have the potential to provide a lifelong set of skills, knowledge and self-awareness.

As health promoting activities for younger people predominately take place in schools, they are now undertaking their iPhD within the
School of Education. The aim of this PhD thesis is to explore how schools with different characteristics, contexts and local communities practically implement such initiatives.

The study uses a mixed methods methodology and a multi-phase design. With this, Rowan is seeking to generate both a broad understanding of school practice across the country as well as an in-depth focus on three school case studies.
