Dr Luke Myers is Associate Professor within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

Current Position

Luke Myers is an Associate Professor in the Energy and Climate Change Division. His role is balanced between education, research and enterprise. Key areas of research include offshore renewable energy, specifically free stream tidal energy (much like wind turbines but underwater). His research has taken him to many different countries to perform experimental testing which is challenging, especially when water, mechanical components and electricity are involved. His research is divided equally between funded research and collaborative work with industrial partners. Luke also enjoys his teaching responsibilities and endeavours to incorporate the latest and most effective techniques, a drive that resulted in a Vice Chancellor’s teaching award in 2013. Luke is well-known for his use of instructional and feedback videos in first year Thermofluids and computing.  He is presently the Director of Programmes for Civil Engineering.

Research interests

Luke began his research in 1999 investigating performance of free stream tidal turbines. This area of research has grown significantly since then with large-scale demonstrator devices installed around the world in recent years.

Luke has experience in turbine performance, resource analysis and structural dynamics whilst much of his recent activity has been with turbulent effects in arrays or farms of devices and how to optimally arrange them. It is not a simple problem; Luke and his group have published a number of high-impact papers on the subject in recent years. Industrial collaboration is a key element of his research ensuring that academic work is always working towards the needs of industry. Energy and buildings is another area of research where Luke has an interest. He has conducted work regarding the energy yields of microwind turbines in different terrain and is also interested in the energy use and generation for commercial or multiple-occupancy buildings.

Personal interests

Once a keen and relatively successful amateur road cyclist Luke has found work and a new young addition to the family has inevitably blunted his speed. However he still regularly commutes 12 miles each way into work by bike and in 2012 became a member of the “Club de cingles” (the entry requirement is cycling up Mont Ventoux in France 3 times in a single day!). Racing and training is now less onerous and Luke is sure that he is a better suited to his job as a University Lecturer than he would have been as a professional cyclist.
