Francesco D'Amore is a Postgraduate research student for Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Working in Human Vibration, you are at the crossroads of many disciplines… Indeed, you need to take ‘subjective’ and ‘objective’ points of view while blending ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ matter!

I obtained my master-level degree in Mechanical Engineering from Sapienza Università di Roma (Italy) by defending a dissertation on the subject of touch perception. I carried out the research work while participating in the Lifelong Learning Programme Erasmus within the Laboratoire de Mécanique des Contacts et des Structures (LaMCoS) at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) Lyon (France).

In 2016, I joined the Human Sciences Group within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton (UK). Research is my main activity here, but I also enjoy teaching and consulting. Whatever the matter, I am really enthusiastic about establishing new collaborations across disciplines and countries!

Research interests

I study the human responses to whole-body oscillatory motion. In particular, I deal with people exposed to vibration and shock when sitting inside cars or other road vehicles.

I am especially interested in road-transport innovations approached from the perspective of human factors and ergonomics (people’s comfort) and of kansei engineering (people’s feelings).

 

PhD research

Provisional title: Computational modelling of the dynamic interaction between the human body and a car seat

Main supervisor: Dr Yi Qiu

Funding agencies: NHK Spring Company (Japan) and University of Southampton (UK)

This research project involves the development and experimental calibration of a finite-element model expected to advance the understanding of the seat-occupant-restraint system. The model is to be applied in optimising the design of road-vehicle seats so as to improve perceived ride quality.
