Inflatable Wings

Wing components for UAV systems tend to be significant in size, with respect to the fuselage length and are structurally designed to meet the flight loads.

Testing wings

For small UAV systems the flight loads are low, making the wings very susceptible to manual handing and impact damage.

Inflatable wings are being investigated and developed at the University of Southampton allowing both the easier transportation and increased survivability of these small UAV systems. Areas of development include: increasing the wing bending stiffness, wing morphing and systems integration of the wing components.
