Mr Nathaniel Baurley is a Postgraduate Researcher in Glaciology in Geography within the University of Southampton.

I began my degree in Geography at Aberystwyth University in September of 2012. It was while studying for this degree that I became interested in Glaciology, and by my third year I was specialising in the subject. This specialism concluded in me spending 4 weeks in the French Alps for my dissertation, where I investigated the impact of rock debris on the rate of surface ablation on Glacier Noir.

Following my graduation in 2015, I stayed at the university to undertake an MSc in Glaciology within the renowned Centre for Glaciology. This course introduced me to a number of new skills and methodologies, while only serving to cement my interest in the subject further. For my thesis I spent 3 weeks in Iceland in the summer of 2017, where I investigated the impact of tephra mobilisation on the surface albedo, roughness and rate of ablation on Sólheimajökul.


BSc (Hons) in Geography (2015) and an MSc (Dist.) in Glaciology (2017), both from Aberystwyth University.

Landscape Dynamics and Ecology

Broadly speaking, my key research interest is centred around understanding how glaciers in Iceland are responding to climate change. This interest, therefore, spans a number of sub-disciplines within the subject. These include surface debris-ice interactions, glacier hydrology, ice flow dynamics, ice shelves and calving dynamics and palaeoglaciological investigations and reconstructions.

A spatio-temporal analysis of two adjacent lacustrine calving glaciers in SE Iceland using repeat UAV photogrammetric surveys.


This is a multi-year project investigating how the surface velocity of both glaciers vary spatially and temporally in response to variations in the pattern and distribution of surface streams on the surface, and to variations in the rate and magnitude of calving at the terminus. This data will be obtained using repeat UAV surveys flown twice yearly during the ablation season before being processed using photogrammetric software packages and ArcGIS.
