Understanding the complexity of life processes that underpin our existence is a voyage of discovery that should not be missed.

Dr Franks is Programme Lead for MSc Professional Practice in Health Sciences and BSc Clinical Practice. He has an interest in pain physiology and lectures in areas such as the anatomical sciences, human physiology, pharmacology, genomics and pain theory.

Career History:

Chris obtained his PhD in neurophysiology from the University of Southampton. He spent several years as a postdoctoral researcher, at the University of Southampton and the University of Oxford before taking up his position in Health Sciences.

Research interests

My research has centred on neuromuscular physiology, the electrophysiological characterisation of synaptic function, the functional genetics of synaptic transmission, functioning of neural networks in model systems, optogenetic manipulation of neuromuscular function and the critical determinants of muscle cell excitability.

  • Programme lead – MSc Professional Practice in Health Sciences BSc Clinical Practice
  • Academic integrity lead – Health Sciences
  • Chris is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of International Association for the Study of Pain. He is also a module lead, a personal academic tutor and contributes to teaching, marking and student supervision on a variety of programmes at all academic levels.
