Mr Trevor Kettle is Lecturer in Mental Health and Lead for Service User and Carer Involvement within Health Sciences at the University of Southampton. His professional background is as a mental health nurse within adult rehabilitation and recovery, with academic activity linked to: All aspects of mental health practice, including pre and post registration nurse programmes; Technology enhanced learning, particularly development of audio podcasts to enhance student understanding; Self-management of long term mental health conditions.

I am an academic who is passionate about increasing patient and public involvement within higher healthcare education. The importance of patient and public involvement (PPI) is borne out by many healthcare professional bodies (Eg NMC and the GMC) and encouraged by reports such as the mid staffs enquiry. My doctorate is exploring the impact of PPI within an academic culture.

Lead role: Patient and Public Involvement.

Trevor's role includes development and implementation of a comprehensive patient and public involvement (PPI) strategy for Health Sciences. Trevor also formed the Experts by Experience (EbE) reference group which meets quarterly. The group consists of a wide variety of patient organisations and individual expert patients and members who are currently involved in curriculum and module development, programme scrutiny and recruitment activities for nurses. He is a Member of the Lived Experience Network (LEN), run by the Higher Education Academy set up to share good practise nationally in the field of patient and public involvement.

Research interests

My main research interests are exploring service user and carer involvement within healthcare education from a staff, student and service user/carer perspective.
