Geoff joined SHTAC in August 2006 and works as a Senior Research Fellow.

It’s great to work on such a diverse variety of topics in a team with diverse skills and experience… the work is never boring, and we’re helping to improve evidence-based decision making, hopefully for the benefit of everyone!

Geoff has a diverse research background, with experience of both primary research (designing and running laboratory and field environmental research studies) and secondary research (designing and conducting systematic maps, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses). He is particularly interested in how to improve the methods and communication of evidence synthesis, and in how the disciplines of health technology assessment and environmental research can learn from one another to help improve the efficiency, validity and credibility of scientific research.

Since Joining SHTAC, Geoff has project-managed a range of systematic reviews, and has led the production of Technology Assessment Reports for NICE and other organisations, on a diverse range of topics. These have included, among others, educational and behavioural interventions for diabetes and weight loss; methods for preventing healthcare-associated infections; therapies for a range of liver diseases and cancers; and tests for detecting pregnancy complications and for diagnosing eye diseases.

BSc (Hons) ARCS, Biology, Imperial College London (1984)

PhD, University of Southampton (1989)

Research interests

Geoff and a group of international co-authors are currently developing a framework to guide the critical appraisal of studies included in environmental management systematic reviews, and are initiating a critical appraisal methods group for the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence (related abstract here).
