Ms Laurence Richard is the Director of the Centre for Language Study in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.

After graduating in English and Anglo-American civilisation and literature from Bordeaux University in 1997, I took a Masters in FLE (français langue étrangère) at La Sorbonne University, Paris and did a PGCE at Homerton College, Cambridge.

I then chose to come to Southampton University where I was offered a place to take a Master of Philosophy in Linguistics. I submitted my thesis entitled, “Native-Speaker/ Non-Native Speaker Interactions in the Undergraduate conversation class” in 2003.

I also spent six months working as a Research Assistant, on a European-funded project looking at the training of Foreign Language Teachers across Europe.

I am the Residence Abroad Coordinator for French and I am also a member of the Student Affairs Committee.

I am a member of the Association for French Language Studies.

Research interests

My research interests are focused on the study of Native-Speaker/ Non-Native Speakers interactions in an oral setting, as well as the creation of electronic tools (Learning Objects) for the teaching of French grammar.

However, as my work as a Research Assistant shows, I also am interested in any aspects of teaching and learning foreign languages.

Research project(s)

Languages and social networks abroad (LANG-SNAP)

Social networks, target language interaction, and second language acquisition during the year abroad.

Report

One of my main teaching interests is the conversation class, and the ways to make it more effective as a setting to trigger more genuine interactions between interlocutors. My main teaching interest however, is the teaching of French language and the teaching of grammar in particular.

I currently coordinate stage 1, and teach stage 2, 4 and 7.
