Ms Laurence Richard is the Director of the Centre for Language Study in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton.

After graduating in English and Anglo-American civilisation and literature from Bordeaux University in 1997, I took a Masters in FLE (français langue étrangère) at La Sorbonne University, Paris and did a PGCE at Homerton College, Cambridge.

I then came to Southampton University to work on a Master of Philosophy in Second Language Acquisition, Linguistics. I submitted my thesis entitled, “Native-Speaker/ Non-Native Speaker Interactions in the Undergraduate conversation class” in 2003.

Research interests

My first research interests were focusing on the study of native-speaker/ non-native speaker interactions.

My current interests relate more to

  • study abroad through the following research project: Languages and social networks abroad (LANG-SNAP)  Social networks, target language interaction, and second language acquisition during the year abroad.
  • the teaching of grammar
  • and the potential impact of feedback on students.
