Biography
Ian Dawson is an artist, sculptor, lecturer and researcher. He is co-director of The Critical Practices Research Group and co-convener of The Material Lab at Winchester School of Art. He has 30 years of experience as a practicing artist and a 20 year career in academia.
From a background in sculpture Ian now specializes on the intersection between 3D printing and new imaging. He works as part of transdisciplinary collaborative teams to develop new ways to explore how 3D printing and imaging technologies can be be part of knowledge transfer processes. His co-edited book Diffracting Digital Images (Routledge 2021) explores digital imaging through the divergent lenses of Archaeology, Art Practice and Cultural Heritage.
Recent collaborations also include working with The Acorn Foundation and The Shiv Nadar University India, to explore the potential of 3D printing in an experimental Lab in Dharavi, one of the largest informal settlements in the world and a major plastic recycling district in Mumbai. He regularly collaborates with members of the Archaeological Computing Research Group and was the invited speaker at 'The 3D in Museums' Conference at The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
He has also written extensively on contemporary art practice in his book Making Contemporary Sculpture(Crowood Press). And has exhibited worldwide with solo shows in New York (James Cohan Gallery), London (C&C Gallery) and Paris (Galerie Xippas) and has works in both public and private collections worldwide,including the Chaney Family collection, GossMichael Collection, and Mickey and Janice Cartin Collection. His work is featured in Contemporary British Sculpture(Schiffer Publishing) and Collage, Assembling Contemporary Art, (Black Dog Publishing).
