Current research
Pete’s work, funded by UK Research and Innovation, the ESRC, the Kavli Trust and the Wellcome Trust, includes:
- examining the mental health of UK pre-school children and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic; and
- randomised controlled trials to prevent anxiety disorders in children at risk of developing these (MY-CATS and Parenting with Anxiety);
- laboratory based experiments examining infants' learning from their mothers and fathers.

Teaching
My primary teaching duties are on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych) Programme.
I lead the module 'Research 3' (PSYC8048).
I also contribute to:
Research 1 (PSYC6172) and Research 2 (PSYC8049) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Skills (PSYC6171).
Furthermore, as a Clinical, Academic and Personal Tutor, I contribute to the DClinPsych clinical placements (PSYC8013; PSYC8014; PSYC8015; PSYC8016; PSYC8035).
I lecture on other programmes, e.g., CBT for [more] Severe Mental Health, (PSYC8829); CBT for Anxiety and Depression (PSYC8455).
Biography
Pete is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology within the Centre for Innovation in Mental Health (CiMH), School of Psychology at the University of Southampton. He is Research Director for the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology (Doctorate in Clinical Psychology).
He is both a clinical psychologist and a scientist, conducting research in children's and young people’s development in the face of adversity, and translating this into psychological programmes to enhance children's and young people’s development and support their families.
For his work as a PhD student, Pete received the 2022 British Psychological Society Award for Outstanding Doctoral Research Contributions to Psychology; first prize in the Springer Nature / ABTA UK National Doctoral Research Awards (Social Sciences), 2020; and the 2020 Dean’s prize for outstanding early career research in the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, University of Southampton. He has been chartered by the British Psychological Society (CPsychol); registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Practitioner psychologist; and accredited as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist with the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies.
Pete is a member of the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ACAMH), was formerly Vice-Chair of its Oxford and Reading branch, is presently a member of its Southern Branch committee; is an external examiner at the universities of Oxford and Surrey, and at King’s College London (Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience); peer reviewer of papers at leading psychology journals and research grant applications; and is a member of the core group preparing and writing the National, 0-5 years Children and Young People's IAPT training curriculum.
