Dr Kathryn Wicks is a Faculty Research and Enterprise Manager based in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Her role involves working closely with academics across the five Schools (Business, Law, Education, Mathematics and Economic, Social and Political Sciences (ESPS) to identify and develop impact and enterprise opportunities. Kathryn is also involved in managing the development of Research Excellence Framework preparations at Faculty level. Kathryn is a gymnast.
Kathryn is interested in investigating issues affecting the wellbeing of older people, particularly from a legal perspective. Her thesis used qualitative methods and explored how older people negotiate social care support through a symbolic interactionist lens.
Kathryn has taught on a variety of modules on the MSc programmes in Gerontology (on campus and online), with a particular interest in older people and the welfare state and in subjective versus biological ageing. Kathryn has also taught on qualitative methods and mixed methods modules.
In addition, Kathryn has convened study skills sessions aimed at postgraduate taught (PGT) level, including Writing Skills, Critical Thinking, Presentation Skills and Essay Writing, and postgraduate research (PGR), including hosting the PGR Writing Group and the PGR Forum (leading sessions such as How to create a Poster, Elevator Pitch, How to deliver a Conference Presentation, Upgrade/Viva Skills).
Kathryn has worked at the University of Southampton since 2015, joining the Department of Gerontology as a full-time Teaching Fellow whilst undertaking her doctoral studies part-time. Her thesis titled ‘How do older people negotiate social care support?’ focused on exploring barriers and enablers faced by older people in seeking help with everyday living.
Kathryn is also a non-practising solicitor, having specialised in the area of Private Client (Wills, trusts, tax-planning, Court of Protection, older client law).
