Dr Sara McKelvie is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer at the School of Primary Care Research. She is interested in community-based alternatives to hospitalisation for older people with complex health and social needs. Her research has concentrated on understanding the clinical work of ambulatory care investigating patient, staff and system needs using ethnographic methods and cognitive task analysis. Sara is interested in the future workforce needed for primary and community care and the changing roles of healthcare professionals within this.

Biography
Sara was awarded her NIHR-CLAHRC funded doctorate on “Clinical Decision Making in Uncertainty; An Ethnography of a Complex Intervention in the Ambulatory Emergency Care setting” at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford in 2021. Sara completed a Masters in Gerontology from King’s College London in 2017.
Sara is also an NHS GP working in ambulatory care, which provides community alternatives to hospital care, treating patients closer to home during an acute illness. She works as Medical Lead for an NHS Foundation Trust, providing clinical leadership for the Intensive Community Care pathway.
