About
Dr Yaiza Hernández Velázquez’s research primarily focuses on the histories and theories of museums, galleries, exhibitions, and archives. Her work examines how the legacies of modernity often remain unacknowledged within these institutions, even as they work towards decolonisation. She often collaborates with the organisations she studies, most recently as a co-curator for the [contra]panorama triennial at MACBA (2022-2025) and as a member of the expert committee for the reconfiguration of the National Museum of Anthropology in Spain (2024-2025). She has published widely and is currently working on a new book project where she looks at the recent past of the “global contemporary” and, in particular, at the proliferation of franchises, biennials, and “art spaces” through the lens of tourism. She is also preparing a themed issue on tourism for the Journal of Visual Cultures, where she is a member of the editorial collective. Her monograph Coleccionismo, Universalismo, Extinción will be published by TEA (Spain) in 2026.
