New event - Creative Methods
Want to try new things in Ethnography?
Or maybe you have already but need some guidance? Explore creative methods in a workshop this July.
Ethnographic practices now extend beyond interviews and participant observation.
New digital tools, smart phones, video, art, photography, mapping and other audio-visual techniques can provide valuable data points for ethnographic research.
But how do we go about incorporating multiple methods? What does it mean for data management? And how do we make sure we're continuing to collect and collate relevant data of ethical integrity and efficacy?
At this event, we'll hear from Emeritus Professor Karen O'Reilly about the principles of ethnography and how these principles can guide us in selecting and applying creative methods to our work.
We'll also hear from fellow researchers about creative methods they have used or are using in their fieldwork.
This insightful discussion will be followed by a networking lunch we're we'll get to share stories and ideas about our work while we eat!
A thrilling start to 2025/26
October 3, 2025
Debating Ethnography is ready to welcome postgraduate students and academic staff to a fun and engaging year of workshops, seminars and informal sessions exploring ethnography.
We are kicking off the academic year with a visual ethnography workshop at the John Hansard Gallery on 30 October. This will be a highly participatory event and will include a tour of the Karama exhibition by photographer and anthropologist, Martin Ruddock.
A seminar and workshop will follow in November, focusing on ‘Writing Ethnography’. Lead by Debating Ethnography founders Professor Marion Demossier and Associate Professor Heidi Armbruster, this workshop will include an exploration of theory and technique with a practical exercise.
We are also partnering with the Centre for Political Ethnography to produce a regular newsletter. Anyone with an interest in ethnography is encouraged to contribute to the newsletter to share insights, skills and experiences with others actively interested in ethnography.
