Research project

VALUE

Project overview

The NHS has a limited budget, so it can’t offer every possible treatment. Instead, it focuses on treatments that give the best value for money. Health economists help decide this by researching which treatments offer the most benefit for the cost.

These decisions affect what care people can get, but health economics is often seen as too technical for most people to get involved in. We believe patients and the public should have a say in this kind of research to make sure it reflects what matters to them.

To help make this happen, we’re running community Listening Cafés to hear people’s thoughts on:

• What they understand about health economics
• How we can explain complex ideas in a clearer way

Together with the public, we’ll also create a simple, easy-to-understand animation that explains the basics of health economics. This will hopefully help more people feel confident about taking part in future research and having their voices heard.
