British Debate Over Slavery

Connections between questions of empire and the transatlantic British debate over slavery

Dr Christer Petley is currently working on the connections between questions of empire and the transatlantic British debate over slavery. Both abolitionists and the planters who defended the slave system argued that they had the best interest of the empire at heart, making the future directions of British imperialism a central issue at stake within this political contest. At present, Dr Petley is approaching these themes using the extensive, rich, and previously neglected letters of Simon Taylor in Jamaica, one of the richest planters in the British Empire. This project, funded by the AHRC, has already resulted in a website, Slavery and Revolution, that showcases Taylor's letters.
