About SHTAC

Customers for SHTAC's research include the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the Department of Health Policy Research Programme, the National Clinical Directors, the NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and Public Health Research Programmes and the Cochrane Collaboration.

SHTAC is involved in research addressing major policy questions on the use of drugs, devices, procedures, screening programmes, health promotion and public health and other interventions.

SHTAC works closely with clinicians, academics, service providers and patient representatives in developing its research programme and has published research on a variety of priority areas in health, including mental health, obesity, cancer, heart disease, asthma, hepatitis and sexual health.

Underlying SHTAC's evaluations is a developing programme of research on the methodology of evidence synthesis and health economics, as well as diversification into the use of the methodology in other academic fields.  SHTAC has published award winning research into climate change, developed research programmes in environmental concerns and research to support policy development by international organisations (e.g World Health Organisation).

SHTAC's expertise in evidence synthesis has led to the establishment of developing training courses in systematic reviews and health economic evaluations.

Knowledge into practice

SHTAC's research to support the development of health policy and guidance to those organising, delivering and receiving health services directly influences clinical and organisational practice in the NHS in England and Wales.  The evaluation reports produced by SHTAC form a key part of the evidence and are available via the NIHR Journals Library and the NICE website.

All SHTAC's research is disseminated through reports, academic peer review journals, professional journals and through conference presentations. See our publications list.

SHTAC researchers are members of several Cochrane Collaboration Groups and have produced systematic reviews on a variety of topics (see our publication list).
