Dr Vicky Hosegood is a Professor in Demography within Social Sciences: Social Statistics & Demography at the University of Southampton.

I am based in South Africa, with joint appointments at the Africa Centre for Health & Population Studies/UKZN and the Human Sciences Research Council.

My primary research interests relate to the demography and health of families in sub-saharan Africa, with a particular focus on South Africa, HIV and AIDS. I am involved in research projects that:




Research interests

Current research projects include:

1. ALPHA: Collaborative network for data analysis in African community-based, longitudinal HIV studies. Phase II of a collaboration between Demographic Surveillance Systems (DSS) and cohort studies in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Kenya. Co-applicant with B Zaba, LSHTM (PI). Wellcome Trust-funded.
2. Couples in context: A randomised controlled trial of a couples-based HIV prevention intervention in Soweto, South Africa. Co-applicant with L Darbes, UCSF (PI). National Institute of Mental Health-funded.
3. Assessing the impact of internal labour migration on intergenerational support, health and income: the cases of China and South Africa. Co-applicant with J Falkingham (PI). ESRC-funded.
4. Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies and Africa Centre Demographic Information System grants. Co-applicant with M Newell, Africa Centre (PI). Wellcome Trust-funded.
