About the project

This project focuses on the development of crystalline dielectric mirrors for high-power Lasers. It aims to shape the future of energy transfer technologies in areas such as, laser interactions, plasma physics, materials science and engineering.

Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) is a ground-breaking technique that uses light to create advanced materials that will enable a new frontier in forming next generation optical components for future photonics applications.

In this project you will:

  • innovate by designing, growing, and characterising advanced crystalline materials for high-power tolerant mirrors
  • collaborate by working with a dynamic team and engaging in interdisciplinary research
  • experiment by gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge techniques and lasers while honing your practical skills
  • explore by contributing to a deeper understanding of PLD dynamics and high-power laser applications

Our Doctoral Hub specialises in advancing research and training the next generation of leaders in energy‑transfer technologies for defence and related sectors. You will be based at the University of Southampton, where throughout your research you will benefit from the support and expertise of our diverse academic community, a community of students working towards similar goals, and our specialist industrial network.

By joining us, you will have access to:

  • Industrial collaboration: Each PhD student within the Hub is partnered with an industry collaborator, providing placement opportunities to work and train alongside industry experts
  • Comprehensive training: The Hub offers a blend of academic and industrial training, preparing you for diverse career pathways in research or industry
  • Cohort experience: Build your research network through inclusion in a vibrant cohort of PhD students that conduct research with academic leaders across leading UK institutions. You will engage in both online and face-to-face activities, including cohort-building events and collaborative learning exercises
  • Funding: A generous, fully funded studentship (covering fees and including a monthly stipend), with additional support for conferences, travel, training, consumables and extended placement with Dstl collaborators
