Bethany Holland is an MRes Advanced Biological Science student within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I graduated in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, from the University of Southampton. My dissertation in Science Communications focused on Tau pathology in Alzheimer’s disease, and the possibility of targeting misfolded Tau protein as part of early treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Research interests

My research interests primarily focus on investigating neurodegenerative diseases, in particular tauopathies, such as Alzheimer’s disease. A significant part of my undergraduate dissertation explored the current scientific research into whether misfolded Tau protein in Alzheimer’s disease is toxic to neurones. Research that suggests hyperhposphorylated Tau protein is not highly toxic to neurones in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease gives rise to the exciting possibility of treating Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages by targeting misfolded Tau protein.

More broadly, I am interested in scientific research into neurodegenerative diseases, and psychiatric disorders.

Why I chose MRes Advanced Biological Science

I chose an MRes in Advanced Biological Science in order to gain experience within neuroscience research and gain more of the practical laboratory skills necessary for a career in scientific research. A significant motivating factor in selecting the programme was that one of my key areas of interest is scientific research into Alzheimer’s disease, and by undertaking this programme I am able to engage in current research into the possible links between Type 2 Diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

Aims for the future

Following graduation, I am looking to pursue a PhD or role in industry within the scope of my research interests, as I continue to pursue a career in neuroscience research.
