What is Clearing and Adjustment?

If your results differ from what you expected, Clearing and Adjustment gives you the opportunity to reconsider your options. As one of the world's leading universities, Southampton offers unrivalled opportunities for talented, ambitious students.

How will I know if I'm in Clearing?

You might be in Clearing if:

  • You applied after 30 June.
  • You didn't receive any offers.
  • You received offers that you have decided not to accept.
  • Your exam results weren't as expected, and you didn't meet the conditions of your offers.

Visit the UCAS website for more advice about Clearing

How will I know if I'm eligible for Adjustment?

You will be eligible for Adjustment if:

  • Your results exceed the conditions of your first choice university.
  • You have paid the full UCAS application fee. If you have paid the UCAS single application fee and want to use Adjustment, you need to pay an additional fee via UCAS.

You will have five days from the date your Firm offer becomes Unconditional Firm (UF) to consider other institutions. Your place at your first choice university will be protected during this period.

You will not be eligible for Adjustment if:

  • You have a confirmed place on a 'changed course offer'.
  • Your original offer was Unconditional.
  • You cannot use the Adjustment period to change your Insurance choice.

What do I do next?

  • If you're eligible for Adjustment, register on UCAS Track to use it. For more information, see the UCAS website.
  • If you're in Clearing, your UCAS Track status will say 'You are in Clearing' or 'Clearing has started'.
  • Call our Adjustment and Clearing hotline or complete our quick online form, both of which will be available on this website on Thursday 17 August. Please have your UCAS personal identification number, your Clearing number (if applicable) and your results to hand.
  • If you already have your results you can contact the admissions team for your chosen subject area.
  • If you are offered a place at Southampton and accept it, the change will show on UCAS Track within 24 hours. Note that if you originally had a firm offer, you will lose it at this point.
