Sheida Afshan is a Lecturer in Structural Engineering and Director of the MSc Civil Engineering programme in the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southampton.

Prior to joining Southampton, I was a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at Brunel University London (2015-2019), having previously held a postdoctoral research position (2013-2015) at Imperial College London and obtained PhD (2013) and MEng (2010) degrees from Imperial College London.

My research interests relate to the resilience and sustainability of new and aging civil engineering infrastructure with particular expertise in the areas of experimental testing, computational modelling and design of steel and steel-concrete composite structures. My research in the area of high-performance steel structures, in particular stainless steels, has had major impact at national and international levels with a number of my research findings included in international design standards. My ongoing research projects at the National Infrastructure Laboratory in Southampton use the suite of state-of-the-art materials and structures testing facilities with the range of unique measurement technologies utilising imaging systems to conduct high-fidelity and data-rich material and structural testing.

I am a Chartered Engineer and a Member of both the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) and Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE). I am a member of the European Committee responsible for Eurocode 3-Part 1.4 (CEN/TC250/SC3 WG4 Evolution of EN 1993-1-4-Stainless steel).
