Advancing sustainable river engineering
The International Centre for Ecohydraulics Research develops solutions to quantify and mitigate the environmental impacts of water resource exploitation on ecosystems services, such as fisheries.
Our water and river engineering research integrates experimentation, modelling and field studies to understand the impacts of water resource exploitation on freshwater ecosystems, and develop engineering methods to mitigate these. By investigating the whole life impacts of structures in rivers and effectiveness of solutions for fish passage, our research contributes to improving sustainability and management of water environments. We also develop cutting edge methods for scalable and sustainable biological wastewater treatment and biofuels production.

Our research on integrated biological systems for wastewater treatment and resource recovery was the foundation for construction of one of Europe's first algal biofuel demonstration plants.
Bioprocesses use micro-organisms to carry out complex chemical reactions that allow wastes to be broken down and new products to be made from the building block materials that are released.
Biological conversion of carbon dioxide and hydrogen into methane offers a means to integrate renewable energy technologies with carbon capture and utilisation.
