Entry qualification equivalencies for students from Oceania

Find out the equivalents in your country to the grades and academic qualifications required to study with us in the UK. These will depend on what level of study you're applying for.
 

You will also need to have your student visa in place. Depending on where you're from, you may need to also meet English language requirements.

If you want to take an undergraduate course with us but do not yet have the qualifications needed to apply, we may offer a foundation course that will enable you to qualify and secure a place. 

Your country's equivalents for their entry requirements will depend on which of these one-year intensive introductions you apply for.

Most of our undergraduate degrees take 3 years to complete full time and award a bachelor’s degree in the field you study.

Australian applicants

To study with us at undergraduate level, Australians need one of the following with good grades:  

  • an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (SSCE)
  • Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
  • completion of a foundation programme at one of the G8 Australian universities

The minimum grade required will depend on which course you're applying for.

New Zealand applicants

To study with us at undergraduate level, New Zealanders need one of the following:  

  • National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) level 3, with good grades particularly in subjects relevant to your course
  • an International Baccalaureate (IB) score of between 28 and 38 points

If you completed all of high school in New Zealand you will also need to show good results for levels 1 and 2.

Overall equivalency grades for the NCEA are:

  • A*AA: level 3 with ‘Excellence’ in two level 3 subjects of 14 credits each and ‘Merit’ in one subject of 14 credits
  • AAA: level 3 with ‘Excellence’ in one level 3 subject of 14 credits and ‘Merit’ in two subjects of 14 credits
  • AAB: level 3 ‘Merit’ in three subjects of 14 credits
  • ABB: level 3 with three level 3 subjects of 14 credits each including two with ‘Merit’
  • BBB: level 3 with three level 3 subjects of 14 credits each including one with ‘Merit’

Other applicants

If you are a student from another country in Oceania, please submit a question to the International Team for information on equivalencies for your country.

The OnCampus pre-master's programmes prepare international students for studying at the master’s degree level. They take place over 2 semesters and focus on improving English language, study and research skills.

If you have a UK 2:2 degree equivalent but need a 2:1, successfully completing a programme will secure you a place on your chosen degree.

To apply for a pre-master's programme, you need:

  • English language skills from 5.0 IELTS or equivalent (with no single element less than 5.0)

Our postgraduate taught degrees involve more advanced study and usually take 1 year, depending on the course. Degrees awarded include master’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas and certificates.

To apply, you need the following:

  • a bachelor's degree from Australia or New Zealand
  • with good grades

To study for a PhD or research degree with us, you need all of the following:

  • a 2:1 undergraduate honours degree
  • a master's degree with merit
  • a strong research proposal

Qualifying degrees must have been awarded by a UK ENIC recognised university in Australia or New Zealand, or another recognised university in other parts of Oceania.
