Hi, I'm Junyu Luan and I studied BSc Mathematics with Actuarial Science within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

The wide variety of modules allowed me to choose exactly what I was interested in. The job prospects for maths graduates from Southampton are great, and I have had many successful applications for a wide variety of jobs.

What do you like about University of Southampton?

The university has a wonderful community, with a vast campus on which you can always find a place you have never seen before. The university has a good bus service which takes you directly into town, taking a maximum of half an hour. At lunch, the Cafe is the place to go eat with your mates and after exams; the Stags is the place to celebrate.

Why did you choose to study Maths at the University of Southampton?

The University of Southampton is in the top twenty for mathematics, and has been for a long time. The average level of teaching is top quality and there are different modules relevant for specific courses, which greatly helps in the future.

What is it like studying Maths at the University?

The maths courses are challenging but rewarding. The final year does not include a massive thesis, and instead has the module CRM; the module, otherwise known as Communicating and Researching Mathematics includes group work which is great because you get to meet and know new people.

What societies or additional activities are you part of and how has this helped your experience of university life?

There are great societies at the university, and I joined the Streetdance and Hiphop Society. The societies for maths and actuarial maths hold regular meetings, with great talks and lots of food. If you want to go to the gym, or play badminton then go to the sports centre on campus which is really good.

What was the topic of your research project and what did it aim to achieve?

The project my group was given in the module CRM was "Fine Wine as a Long Term Investment". The project was my top choice, and was great fun. The aim of the project was to find a potential portfolio of fine wines which can give the highest return in 10 years, and compared portfolios of risk-averse investors to that of risk-seeking investors. I enjoyed working in a mixed random group, which enabled me to adapt to and make the best out of various different working styles, and I gained valuable leadership, teamwork, planning and communication skills through the project. The assigned lecturers who supported us and answered all our queries were extremely helpful, and I would do it all again!

What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying Maths?

Studying maths in Southampton has taken me far from home, and given me a greater view of the field. The wide variety of choices of modules allowed me to choose exactly what I was interested in, resulting in a more satisfactory study life. The job prospects for maths graduates from Southampton are great, and I have had many successful applications for a wide variety of jobs.
