Postgraduate - Masters

Our interdisciplinary MSc in Public Health, with a pathway in Nutrition, starts in September 2013. It is a collaboration between the Faculties of Medicine, Social, Human and Mathematical Sciences and Business, Law and Art, with teaching from Health Sciences.

Structure of the MSc in Public Health
The programme will be delivered in modules of learning and will normally be completed in 1 year full time or 2-5 years part time leading to 90 ECTS at HE7.

Core modules
Epidemiology, Enabling Change for Health Improvement, Development and Implementation of Public Health Policies and Strategies, Statistics and Qualitative Methods for Public Health.

Optional modules
Advanced Statistics for Epidemiology, Assessment of Nutritional Status (core for Nutrition pathway), Communicable Disease Control, Developing Public Health Practice, Food Systems (core for Nutrition pathway), Geographic Information Systems, Health Service Organisation and Evaluation, Nutrition in Harsh Environments and Public Health, Law and Ethics.

Students may also take existing modules in Demography, Geography, Gerontology and Sociology where timetabling permits.

Self-directed study is key

Teaching and Assessment
Learning is facilitated by a variety of teaching methods including: lead lectures, seminars, enquiry and work based learning, critical incident analysis, facilitated reflection, workshops, group work, web-based learning and self-directed study.

Assessment methods include: essays, case studies, reflective accounts, oral presentations, debates, exams, a personal portfolio and a dissertation that can be empirical research or a professional project.
