Centre for Language Study

Friends talking at a table with expressive hands

We provide a wide range of language learning courses and resources, for students.

About

You’ll start at a level that matches your ability, in your chosen language. Our courses are tailored to your needs.

As a specialist linguist, whether you want to further your language studies after an A-Level or start a language ab-initio, we will help you to reach graduate level and get the language focus you want. Depending on your degree programme, language modules will form between 25% to 75% of your degree.

If you're studying another subject at the University, you can join us and learn a language for credits as part of your degree, if your programme allows for it. If it does not, come and take advantage of our unique Southampton Language Opportunity scheme. This offers free (non-credit bearing) language courses to all University of Southampton students.

If you’re part of the local community or a member of staff, we can offer you the chance to learn a language through our Lifelong Learning programme.

Resources

You'll also have excellent resources to support you. By joining our community of language learners, you'll take advantage of our ambitious language teaching. We'll give you the tools to become the best linguist you possibly can.

Our highly effective teaching methods encourage independence and taking responsibility for your own learning, through continuity of methods:

  • group and pair work
  • four skills
  • grammar
  • translation
  • interpreting
  • mediation activities
  • language lab
  • online
  • virtual learning environment (VLE)
  • face-to-face
  • student-led oral classes

Principal Teaching Fellow

Research interests

  • My main research interests are centred on pedagogical and philosophical issues concerning teaching and learning in higher education. I am particularly committed to identify and apply effective teaching and learning techniques to integrate creativity, criticality and self-reflection into the Modern Languages and Linguistics curriculum. Likewise, my research into the contribution of a compulsory period of residence abroad to our languages degrees has opened invaluable opportunities for me to observe the development of undergraduate students as language specialists and critical beings. This area has also inspired me to pay special attention to the impact of mental health challenges on students' learning experiences and academic performance.
