Leader of World's Most Successful Speculative Trading Syndicate Visits Centre

Published: 4 March 2013

The Centre for Risk Research was fortunate to secure a two-day visit from Professor William Benter, the founder and leader of the world's most successful speculative trading syndicate.

A captivated audience

William Benter, reputed to be the most successful bettor of all time, spent the two days devoting his time and expertise to a variety of activities within the Centre.

He delivered a lecture entitled How Decision Analytics Beat the Market to a packed theatre of enthused masters students and academics. The lecture provided a rare opportunity to gain insights into the processes and theories that enabled William to successfully model and predict sporting event outcomes and to win millions of dollars. After the lecture, William addressed a number of topical questions from the captivated audience and then took the time to engage in more detailed discussions with a small number of students.

Small differences make big impacts

The following day, William worked with staff and PhD students from the Centre on a number of projects concerning the analysis, modelling and prediction of outcomes in financial markets. Drawing on his extensive technical knowledge and expertise, William provided advice and instructions to help develop and optimize the projects.

Later, William provided an exclusive video interview, in which he discussed his close affinity to the Centre for Risk Research. During the interview, William said "I became aware of the faculty here at Southampton some years ago from attending international conferences. We quickly established friendships and I became increasingly interested in the work that goes on here. I'm now involved in a research project here at Southampton and I'm very pleased with the success so far". To watch the video, please click here.
