Risk Experts Collaborate with New Centre of Excellence in Cybersecurity

Published: 18 March 2013

The Centre for Risk Research (CRR) has recently been involved in a successful bid to establish a Centre of Excellence in Cybersecurity at the University of Southampton.

The new Academic Centre of Excellence in Cybersecurity will form part of the government's national cyber security strategy in partnership with the Research Council UK's Global Uncertainties Programme, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.

Three members of the Centre for Risk Research (CRR), Professors Johnnie Johnson and Ming-Chien Sung, and Dr Tiejun Ma, are involved in projects associated with cyber security as part of their research into real-time risk models of financial trading systems. The CRR is also planning to launch a new master's programme in Risk and Cyber Security in 2014 and will contribute modules to a new MSc in Cyber Security.

Cybersecurity: A Risk Perspective

"We are delighted to be part of this new Centre of Excellence and have much to contribute" says Tiejun: "We look forward to collaborating with colleagues and sharing our expertise in dealing with risk and uncertainty in online activities in the financial markets."

Southampton is one of the only eight UK universities identified to help make the country's government, businesses and consumers more resilient to cyber-attack by extending knowledge through original research and providing top quality graduates in the field of cyber security. The University also hopes to establish a Doctoral Training Centre in Cyber Security, to help produce expert postgraduates skilled in all aspects of cyber security research.
